What I Saw in a Split Second

Every now and then someone will tell me that Miss Banana looks just like me. I always smile and say, "You think so?" but I never see it. Until the other day at the park. I looked at her and saw myself. I wanted to tell her to freeze or something.

I took this picture as quickly as I could, but didn't quite capture it. It was only there for a few seconds, but it was most definitely there. The look in her eyes, the shape of her face, even the way she walked. I saw and remembered my 7 year old self. The feelings, the energy, the awkward teeth. I was so surprised to see so much of myself in her. Surprised and excited. And grateful for the memory and understanding that came in those seconds.

I can see myself in some of my children too, some more than others. I can also see my sisters or my husband in my children - not just how they look physically but their personalities. It often makes me wonder how my ancestors were, what traits they passed on, where I got certain characteristics from. Can't wait for that big reunion in the sky to find out.

What a great of her! Samuel says he didn't recognize her at first because "she has a different coat". Had to share that because I thought it was funny.

I didn't know you at 7, but I've always thought she looks like you.

Cute picture.

I see my husband in my kids mostly, but people tell my they are caricatures of me at the same ages.

That is so neat you were finally able to see yourself in her. Happy for you! I especially liked your final line "Grateful for the memory and understanding that came in those seconds". So well said that it brought a lump to my throat, cus I felt like I really knew what you meant, even though I don't have any children of my own. Thank you for sharing your special insight, it was very sweet.
